A fair way for couples to split bills

A proportional split divides each shared cost by income share: your share is your income divided by your combined income. When one partner earns more, they pay more in dollars, but both pay the same percentage.

Example: Mark earns $100,000 and Mary $75,000, so they pay 57.14% and 42.86%. On $1,000 rent that's $571.43 and $428.57; on a $150 electric bill, $85.71 and $64.29.
